Rigid Boards

with 2 comments

Rigid Insulation Boards are commonly manufactured using phenolic, polyisocyanurate polystyrene (PIR), Urethane (PUR) and Polystyrene.

Celotex PIR (polyisocyanurate polystyrene)

Celotex General Purpose Boards can be used throughout a property for a varied selection of applications, including …

Celotex TB4000 – general purpose – often used to inhibit thermal bridging

Celotex GA4000 – general purpose rigid insulation board

Celotex XR4000 – high performance, general purpose board

Celotex CW4000 – Cavity Wall sized boards.

Celotex CG4000 Fire Resistant Board specifically targeted at partial fill cavity wall applications

Celotex EL3000 Energy-Lok is glass tissue faced on both sides – for use in flat roof structures

Celotex FF4000 Fast-R is purpose designed for use in internal underfloor heating applications

Celotex FR4000 Fire Resistant Board are specifically aimed at pitched roof and wall applications requiring Class O fire performance

Celotex PL4000 high performance thermal insulation board bonded to 12.5mm tapered edged plasterboard

Celotex SL4000 is specifically targeted at concrete soffit floor applications beneath habitable buildings such as offices or apartments

Celotex TA4000 is a fire rated board, purpose designed for single-ply flat roofing applications

Celotex TC3000 built-up flat roofing applications, and is suitable for use in hot applied bituminous and mastic asphalt waterproofing systems

Celotex TD4000 Tempchek Deck Range is a PIR insulation board bonded to plywood, used for smaller flat roof applications

Urethane (PUR) Boards

PUR insulation has lesser performanceagainst fire than PIR. Also, equivalent Celotex PIR Boards offer better thermal insulation performance … and are more commonly sold individually, rather than in pack quantities. PUR Boards are marketed by Kingspan as being “application specific.”

ThermaPitch TP10 is rafter level insulation for tiled or slated pitched warm roof spaces … sold in pack quantities

ThermaRoof TR21 & 22 are designed for flat roof insulation beneath partially bonded built-up felt and mastic asphalt

ThermaRoof TR26 & 27 used for insulation beneath mechanically fixed PVC single-ply waterproofing systems

ThermaRoof TR31 is a structural 6mm plywood composite insulation for use beneath partially bonded built up felt

ThermaWall TW50 produced for partial fill cavity wall insulation

ThermaWall TW53 designed for wall insulation for use behind traditional and lightweight polymer modified renders

ThermaWall TW55 specifically for insulating timber and steel wall framing systems

ThermaFloor TF70 designed for insulation of solid concrete and suspended ground floors

Kingspan Phenolic Foam Boards

Kingspan Kooltherm Boards are arguably the best performing product specific insulation boards.
However, offering approximately 10% improved performance on Rigid PIR Boards … but at 25% higher cost, they come at a price …

Kooltherm K3 for use in ground floors, on supported or suspended concrete and timber floors

Kooltherm K5 mechanically fixed to masonry or timber frame walls behind polymer modified render systems

Kooltherm K7 pitched roof boards for rafter level insulation for tiled or slated pitched warm roof spaces

Kooltherm K8 premium performance partial fill cavity wall insulation with low emissivity foil facings

Kooltherm K10 is a soffit board designed for use under structural ceilings

Kooltherm K15 rainscreen board is faced both sides and is used to insulate behind cladding systems

Kooltherm K17 performance insulated phenolic plasterboard for Plaster Dab and Adhesive Bonding

Kooltherm K18 performance insulated phenolic plasterboard for Mechanical Fixing

Expanded Polystyrene

Expanded polystyrene provides the poorest pro rata performance, but is commonly the cheapest option, and should be considered where performance against fire is not an issue, and where there may be a surfeit of available space, such as below a suspended floor.

Jabfloor 70 Expanded Polystyrene Insulation Boards for floating; suspended; beam and block floors, and incorporation with underfloor heating

Kay Metzeler EPS 70 flooring panels placed above or below a concrete slab or a precast concrete ground floor application

Extruded Polystyrene

ThermaFloor TF73 (offering a higher performance then expanded polystyrene) rigid extruded polystyrene insulation boards are designed for floating and suspended floors with excellent compressive strength. Bonded to interlocking edge chipboard used for laying upon concrete slabs

  1. I am looking at your just-insulation.com web site, and am surprised at the emphasis you are placing on stock shortages due to Celotex increasing their prices next month.
With four weeks to go before the rate hikes – surely you have got to be exaggerating?

    • Greetings Chas,
Thanks for being one of the first to post a message to our new blog.
Sadly, the situation with Celotex availability is all too real. We have spoken to a number of depots this morning, and already they are being advised of extended delivery lead-times from Celotex Distribution. The situation is already reflected in our sales volume, which has doubled over the first two weeks of May.
The trouble is that this 12% price increase is coming on top of an 8% rise last October … which is further exacerbated by the increased thermal value requirements being inflicted by Building Control following the changes to the Building Regulations which came into effect on October 1, 2010.
Look out for a discussion on our Blog about the increased Building Regulation requirements … coming soon.
